A Warm Knit
Your Grandma, she’s a real firecracker. Between her bike tour of Italy, daily tai-chi sessions, organizing the community garden, coaching Girls on the Run, there’s no time for old fashioned grandmother stuff.
Like knit.
So if you’re coveting some cozy hand-knit goodies from dear Grandma, you’re looking at a delivery date of 2009. Alternatively, cut your wait time and hook yourself up with some sweet knits from Icelandic Design’s Newari collection.
Created by Nepalese village women, every piece is crafted by hand. Using locally harvested wools that are hand dyed, these artisans knit sweaters, hats, mittens, and so much more.
There’s the brightly colored Bheri hat with beading detail and a fleece liner to prevent itchy head. Or be spring-like with Janapur hat and mittens with its pretty embroidered flower accents. And keep your lower digits cozy with some fun slipper socks that feature leather soles for extra durability.
The Newari knitting program was the brainchild of Gerdur Kristjansdottir, founder of Icelandic Design. In addition to providing the Nepalese women a decent source of income, the program also includes medical benefits, scholarships to knitters’ children, and a monthly stipend to cover basic expenses.
Villages have reported that improvements to the local economy can be directly attributed to Icelandic Design's knitting program.
Meaning wearing a Newari design this winter will give you the warm and fuzzies inside and out.
