The Running Grind
You know it’s time to pare down your collection of athletic footwear when:
A) Your friends call you Sporty Imelda;
B) The quest for a glimpse of your closet floor rivals a quest to climb K2;
C) If you lined up your shoes end to end, it would be a lap around the track.
C is exactly what Nike wants to do with your old worn out shoes. Since 1993, Nike has been collecting athletic shoes (all brands) and converting them into sport surfaces. Shoes are processed and grinded into Nike Grind, a material that's used for running tracks, basketball courts, soccer fields and playgrounds.
Reuse-A-Shoe goes hand-in-hand (or dare we say, foot-to-foot) with Nike’s Let Me Play initiative, which promotes healthy living for kids through physical activity. So far, Nike has donated over 250 sport surfaces to underserved communities around the world. And in eco-terms, that's equivalent to 20 million pairs of shoes or 15,000 tons that's been diverted from the landfill.
Your old metal-free, cleat-free athletic shoes can be dropped off at numerous collection sites located throughout North America, Europe and Australia. Alternatively, they can be mailed directly to the recycling center.
Either way, you'll be on the right track.
